Congratulations, Joseph Meyer!

2026 CT Teacher of the Year Finalist and High School Latin Teacher at Glastonbury High School in Glastonbury, CT

About Joey

Joseph (Joey) Meyer has taught Latin at Glastonbury High School (GHS) for 21 years. He believes studying Latin and the ancient Roman world gives students both a window into the past and a lens for making sense of their ever-changing present. Aware of Latin’s reputation as an exclusive subject, he works intentionally to create classrooms where all students, regardless of background or ability, feel safe, seen, and empowered.

Meyer’s contributions outside the classroom reflect his commitment to inclusion and community-building. At GHS, he helped establish the Advisory program, which now trains more than 100 student facilitators to foster peer connections during monthly extended homerooms. He co-chaired a school climate and leadership self-study for NEASC, supported anti-bullying initiatives, and co-advises the Classics Club, all with an emphasis on student voice and community.

Beyond GHS, Meyer has served in leadership roles with the Classical Association of Connecticut and contributed to the design of the ACTFL Latin Interpretive Reading Assessment, a tool used nationwide to measure Latin reading proficiency. He has presented and published on topics such as equity and empathy in the Latin classroom, mentoring new teachers, developing advisory programs, and promoting Latin through transferable skills.

He earned his BA from Wesleyan University and his MAT from UMass-Amherst. He lives in West Hartford with his amazing wife and two sons.
