Mohegan Hosts 2024 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program
Welcomes Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona
The Mohegan Tribe kicked off its annual Connecticut Teacher of the Year program at Mohegan Sun on Monday, a three-day symposium and celebration of Connecticut’s 2024 Teacher of the Year, finalists, and semifinalists. The annual event welcomes members of the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Council, a group composed of former recipients of the honor and representatives from educational organizations, businesses, and the community.
On Monday, federal Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona spoke at the event which was also attended by local elected officials and community leaders.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Empowered to Lead Symposium (E2Lead) features inspirational speakers, networking opportunities, and interactive sessions. This year features a 3-day celebration in honor of the 2024 Teacher of the Year cohort. Educators are being given tools for integrating Indigenous studies into their classrooms through the Mohegan Tribe’s department of curriculum and instruction. They will also partake in educational tours of the Tantaquidgeon Museum and location-based tours of Uncas Leap.
Kiana Foster-Mauro, a fourth-grade teacher at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School in New London, was named Connecticut’s 2024 Teacher of the Year. The recognition is the state’s highest honor celebrating extraordinary teachers. The Mohegan Tribe is a proud sponsor of the annual award, and each year hosts a gathering to honor recipients, nominees, and Teacher of the Year Council members.
"The Mohegan Tribe is honored to sponsor the annual Connecticut Teacher of the Year event, and to participate in programs that acknowledge the dedication and tireless work of our state educators,” said James Gessner, Jr., Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe. "We applaud Ms. Foster-Mauro and all educators involved in this program for their tireless commitment to preparing our next generation with the tools and skills needed to succeed. The Mohegan Tribe will continue to support efforts to support Connecticut’s local schools, teachers, and students.”
