About Janice
Janice Skene has taught Health and Physical Education in Glastonbury for 35 years. She has served in almost every school in the district and helped countless students on their way to developing lifelong health and wellness.
According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alan Bookman, Janice has been at the forefront of supporting student mental wellness for years. “She provides students with a safe learning environment where they can comfortably take appropriate risks.” Bookman notes that the entire school community seek her out for her leadership, positive spirit, and skills. “Miss Skene truly represents the best in Glastonbury Public Schools and the best in Connecticut teaching.”
Miss Skene’s teaching is centered on the student. She is inspired by the Dr. Harvey Silver quote, “If they can’t learn the way you teach, then teach the way they learn.” She says, “I just love seeing a child’s eyes light up when they feel seen and known or when they finally “get it” and succeed with an activity. It’s that magical and meaningful moment that keeps teachers going.”
Buttonball Lane Principal Janet Balthazar notes that two phrases Ms. Skene is known for are “whatever you need” and “it’s all about the kids.” Miss Skene has won the hearts of students as well. “In the eyes of our students, she is famous!”
In addition to her work with her school community, Miss Skene has been an active member and leader in CTAHPERD (Connecticut Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) and the CT Cadre of Physical Education Trainers for many years. She has also been a Glastonbury Special Olympics coach for over 30 years.
