About Sara
Sara Leisten has been teaching students at Norwich Free Academy to look around and explore the natural world for the past 18 years. She loves to travel and bring her real-world experiences to the classroom, reminding students that every day is an opportunity to learn something new. Whether in Mongolia, the Galapagos, or digging up dinosaurs in Montana, she always finds connections that inspire new lessons. Leisten is an advocate for teachers through her work with new and aspiring teachers and her local union. She is passionate about grading reform, leading a committee to bring about changes to ensure learning and equity. She is continuously learning and seeks professional development opportunities that broaden her understanding of the world.
Outside the classroom, Leisten is a black belt in karate, a decent ballroom dancer, and an excellent baker (though a terrible chef). She spends time building LEGO sets, crocheting animals, hanging out with her two cats, and adventuring with her husband, sister, and other family and friends.
