Uncasville, CT (March 25, 2008) - The Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun have been honored by the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) as 2008 National Corporate Advocate of the Year. The Waterford Country School nominated the Mohegan Tribe/Mohegan Sun for the distinguished award, which singled out The Mohegan Tribe from a field of nominees that included The Chicago Bears football team and Key Bank of Albany, New York.

The CWLA is a Washington, DC-based organization working to ensure the safety and well-being of families and children in the United States. In a notification letter to Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council, the CWLA cited the Waterford Country School’s nomination, which stated that “(the) Mohegan Tribal Nation/Mohegan Sun’s philanthropic initiatives, and its policies and practices at every level exemplify a commitment to the betterment of at-risk and disadvantaged children and families. The tribe has provided significant leadership in addressing the safety and well-being of tribal and employee children and families.”

The award ceremony was held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 for a group of over 1,000 guests, including U.S. Representative Joe Courtney from Connecticut’s 2nd Congressional District. Tribal Vice Chairwoman Lynn Malerba represented the Mohegan Tribal Council, and was joined in receiving the award by Christine Murtha, a former councilor for The Mohegan Tribe who serves on the Waterford Country School’s Board of Directors. Ms. Malerba called the occasion as “a very moving ceremony” and noted the presence of other representatives from Native American health concerns at the awards ceremony.
