Mohegan Tribal Nation (January 16, 2008) – Mohegan Tribal Chairman Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum and members of the Mohegan Tribal Council met with Mayor Benjamin Lathrop and members of the government of the city of Norwich, Connecticut. The two groups came together in the Norwich City Council chambers for the inaugural presentation of a check for $200,000 to the new annual Sachem Fund. “The Sachem Fund continues a long history between The Mohegan Tribe and The City of Norwich,” said Chairman Bozsum, “this is a great day for Norwich and The Mohegan Tribe.”
The Sachem Fund was created after The City of Norwich and The Mohegan Tribe came together over the fate of the former site of the Masonic Temple. Located at the intersection of Washington and Sachem streets, the site now stands as a memorial to the many Mohegan leaders and tribal members who were buried there during previous centuries. The leaders of the Mohegan Tribe and City of Norwich created The Sachem Fund with the intent of revitalizing the downtown area, and as a method for sustaining the history, arts and culture of the City. Over the next five years, an annual fund of $200,000 each from both the Tribe and the City will be distributed to varied proposals considered worthy by a review panel composed of members of both governments. James Gessner, Jr., Corresponding Secretary of the Mohegan Tribal Council, and William Quidgeon, Jr., Treasurer of the Mohegan Tribal Council, will serve on the advisory board of the Sachem Fund. Tribal Council Ambassador Mark Brown will serve as an Alternate.
