Mohegan Tribe Opens State of the Art Energy, Environment, Economics and Education Center
In its continuing effort to protect the environment, improve air quality and strengthen the economy through educational initiatives, the Mohegan Tribe officially opened the “Mohegan Energy, Environment, Economics and Education Center” in February 2004. The formal ribbon-cutting ceremony also featured a tour of the center’s state-of-the-art fuel cell facility.
“The Mohegan Tribe has always been committed to protecting and preserving our environment and the Earth’s precious natural resources,” said Peter Schultz, Vice Chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council. “The opening of the Mohegan Energy, Environment, Economics and Education Center will allow us the opportunity to educate scientists, engineers and others about innovative technologies that not only helps to protect the environment but also makes sound economic sense.”
According to Mohegan Environmental Administrator Dr. Norman Richards, the center’s primary function will be to provide visiting scientists, engineers, environmental advocates and others with the opportunity to participate in pollution prevention seminars, demonstrations and review case study information on the Mohegan Reservation systems approach to pollution minimization.
“When we began to construct the Mohegan Sun the Tribe made a conscious effort to develop “green” systems that ensure that the Tribe’s facilities conserve resources and do not unnecessarily impact the environment,” Richards said. “This center will provide others with a unique opportunity to learn about new methods and technologies that produce cleaner, more efficient energy while producing positive economic developments as well.”
Among the innovative, “clean” technologies featured at the Mohegan Reservation are: stationary fuel cells with cogeneration carbon sequesteration, photovoltaic electric generation, ground source heat pumps, hotel energy demand reduction, materials recycling and reuse, alternate vehicle fuel use, vehicle emission control through retrofitting and many other technologies.
As part of their ongoing commitment to improving the environment and being good neighbors, the Mohegan Tribe is providing technical and financial support to the Norwich Board of Education as they shift to cleaner diesel-fueled school buses.
