Oath of Office for Newly Elected Tribal Council on October 3 2011
On Monday, October 3, the four newly-elected members of the Mohegan Tribal Council took the oath of office in a private ceremony at the Mohegan Church in Uncasville. The oath was administered by the Tribe’s Chief, Lynn Malerba “Many Hearts,” and a blessing was delivered by the Mohegan Tribe’s Medicine Woman Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel. Robert Soper Sr., Chairman of the Council of Elders, presided over the ceremony. The Council of Elders oversees all cultural and historical interests of the Tribe.

The four council members taking the oath were elected to office by tribal members on Tuesday, August 30, in an election that had to be postponed from its original date due to Hurricane Irene. Treasurer Thayne D. Hutchins, Jr. and Ambassador Mark F. Brown will resume those posts on the Tribal Council. Incumbent Cheryl Todd, previously a Tribal Councilor, will take the position of Recording Secretary, assuring the accuracy and accountability of all of the Tribal Council’s resolutions, ordinances and transactions. Newly elected Mark Sperry has been named Tribal Councilor. Sperry spent several years as the Director of the Tribe’s Education office, and has a background in teaching and counseling. All of the officers will hold their positions for four-year terms.

Other members of the Tribal Council are Chairman Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, Vice Chairman James Gessner, Jr., Corresponding Secretary Kathy Regan-Pyne, Councilor William Quidgeon, Jr., and Councilor Jonathan S. Hamilton, Sr.

The next Tribal Council election will take place in the summer of 2013.
