Firefighters Gather on Mohegan Reservation for Donation of Fire Equipment
(Mohegan Tribal Nation, November 6, 2008) --- Firefighters from the Penobscot Tribe in Maine and the Town of Oakdale, Connecticut visited the Mohegan Reservation as the Mohegan Tribal Council donated used equipment to their organizations. Joe Lavin, Executive Director of the Public Safety division, and Jody Grenier, Deputy Fire Chief, helped to co-ordinate both donations by the Mohegan Tribe.
The Penobscot Tribe, based in Penobscot, Maine, will receive a 1996 Ford F450 E-One fire truck to replace their 1979 GMC model. In turn, the 1979 model will be donated to a community fire department near the Penobscot reservation. Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, presented the title for the vehicle to Kirk Francis, Chief of the Penobscot Tribe, while officers from both divisions and members of the Mohegan Tribal Council also participated. Joe Loring, Fire Chief for the Penobscot Tribe, commented “This is awesome. We are more than grateful.”
In addition to the fire truck, the Penobscot Tribe will receive breathing apparatus tanks donated by the Town of Franklin, and equipment to be used in a mass casualty situation.
The Oakdale Volunteer Fire Department will receive a large prime mover. The two-part vehicle by Freightliner, built by Pierce, can be used for decontamination purposes for up to 100 people at a time in the event of a Hazardous Materials event. Oakdale is a district located about 10 miles from the Mohegan Reservation in the Town of Montville. Montville Mayor Joseph W. Jaskiewicz and Oakdale Fire Chief Gary Murphy were presented title to the vehicle by Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum and the Mohegan Tribal Council. “We are always happy to give back to our community,” said Chairman Bozsum “especially when it comes to protecting our families and fellow citizens.”
The Mohegan Tribal Fire Department was established for the sovereign nation of the federally-recognized Mohegan Tribe of the Indians of Connecticut. The Fire Department not only helps in Fire and Emergency events on the Mohegan reservation, but has also provided rescue, help and assistance in the surrounding communities, including the devastating fire of April 2008 that destroyed the Peachtree apartment complex in Norwich.
