Environmental Stewardship
The Mohegan commitment to preserving the natural environment is essential to our values as a Tribe. For that reason, we consider conservation and responsible energy management in the initiatives we undertake.

Fuel Cell Technology
Our fuel cells produce electrical power and useful heat converted from natural gas for the Mohegan Sun Casino. They do not require combustion and emit only minimal amounts of carbon dioxide, diminishing their impact on global warming. We also arranged to plant enough trees in Costa Rica to create a rainforest, which both absorbs carbon dioxide and supports a wildlife habitat. Another system generates water that is used to run four fuel cells with no emissions to the air.

Recycling
The Mohegan Tribe’s success rate on recycling is better than 97% of Connecticut’s cities and towns. We recycle paper, plastic, bottles, cans, metal and cardboard. Food waste from the Casino’s restaurants goes to a local pig farm, while fat from the deep fryers is used by a rendering plant for animal feed.

Vehicle Emissions
We reduce vehicle emissions in a number of ways. Many of our Public Safety officers patrol on bicycles instead of cruisers. They move more quickly and reduce the total emissions from Tribal patrols. The department has also started a program of using gas/electric cars and has purchased a fuel cell vehicle.

Energy conservation
Energy isn’t wasted on empty rooms. The rooms at our hotel are only heated and cooled at a minimal level until guests register for them. Then the temperature controls are switched to a comfortable setting during their stay.
